Brief Description of the Program:
       

    The Nationally Accredited (CACREP) Masters Degree programs in Counselor Education prepare individuals for professional counseling positions in schools, community mental health settings, and rehabilitation agencies and institutions. These programs emphasize the blending of research and theory with practical applied experience. They also emphasize and reflect the urban and multicultural nature of our community, as well as general trends within specified fields. All programs involve extensive clinical field work, which provide students with the opportunity to apply learned skills as well as experience the clinical work environment. The three tracks are as follows:

Mental Health Counseling (61 credits)
The Master of Science in Counselor Education, Mental Health Counseling Track, is designed to educate and prepare individuals interested in functioning as counselors and practitioners in community mental health settings, institutions, hospitals, schools, and private practice.  Nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the program meets all requirements as outlined by the Florida Department of Medical Quality Assurance for licensure as a Mental Health Counselor.

School Counseling (58 credits) The Master of Science in Counselor Education, School Counseling Track, prepares individuals for professional counseling positions in schools.  Nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), the program meets all requirements as outlined by the Florida Department of Education for certification as a School Counselor at the elementary, middle, and/or high school levels.

Rehabilitation Counseling (60 credits) The Master of Science in Counselor Education, Rehabilitation Counseling Track, prepares individuals for rehabilitation counseling positions in a variety of settings, including state vocational rehabilitation agencies, independent living centers, community rehabilitation programs, alcohol and drug rehabilitation programs, mental health centers, insurance companies, schools, private rehabilitation companies, and other private non-profit rehabilitation programs. The program meets all requirements as outlined by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) and prepares students for certification in Rehabilitation Counseling (CRC).




Application Requirements:
Requirements for FIU Graduate School:
  • Applicants should have a bachelor's degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A GPA of 3.2 in last 60 semester hours of upper division undergraduate study.
  • No GRE required.
Requirements for the Counselor Education Program:

  • Three letters of recommendation
  • An autobiographical statement
  • A resume
  • An interview with the Counselor Education Admissions Committee
  • Passing all sections of the CLAST is required for majors in the school counseling track
Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • Foreign graduate applicants are accepted subject to space and fiscal limitations.
  • Must be academically eligible for further study in their own country.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by presenting a minimum score of 550 or higher paper based and a minimum score of 213 computer-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • Applicants who hold an undergraduate degree from an institution within the United States or other English speaking countries are not required
