The
College of Business Administration offers a Ph.D. in Business
Administration. The objective of this degree program is to prepare
students for a career in academia by
building their understanding of the substantive domains and literature
within their selected areas of concentration. It provides them with the
methodological and analytical tools required for executing research and
creating knowledge. It develops their skills in formulating,
conducting, and communicating quality research. In the process, it also
fosters their ability to teach effectively.
The
Ph.D. program typically requires four years of full-time study:
Two-and-a-half years of coursework and summer projects and a
year-and-a-half of dissertation research. Students will take a minimum
of 16 courses (with a minimum of six courses in their chosen area of
concentration). Students also will complete summer research projects
under faculty supervision.
NOTE: The Finance Ph.D. program will not be
admitting any more students until Fall 2004. The deadline for
submitting an application for the Fall 2004 class is March 1, 2004. For
students who wish to apply for fellowship, deadline for submitting
application is January 15, 2004. The Marketing Ph.D. program will not be
admitting its next class until either Fall 2004 or Fall 2005, depending
on the availability of funding.
Application Requirements:
Those students selected for the Ph.D. program
must demonstrate strong evidence of ability, scholarly interest, and
success.
They also must have a Master's degree from an
accredited college or university.
Three letters of recommendation.
Official transcripts from all institutions in
which the applicant has completed any undergraduate and graduate course
work. Applicants are expected to have at least a 3.0 GPA in their
graduate coursework.
Entering students are expected to score a
minimum of 560 on the GMAT. (The average GMAT score for entering
students is more than 600.).The FIU GMAT code number is 5206.
Those applicants interested in the Finance
concentration may substitute their Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score for
a GMAT score. The minimum GRE score required is 1150.
A formal statement of purpose for seeking the
doctoral degree and specific reasons for applying to Florida
International University. The statement should not exceed five, typed,
double-spaced pages.
Additional Requirements for International Students:
If applicant is an international student whose
native language is one other than English, an official report of his or
her score on the TOEFL from the Educational Testing Service.
A minimum score of 570 (230 on computer-based
test) is expected.
The University requires foreign applicants to
furnish a detailed statement showing specific sources of financial
support and the exact amount expected from each source.
The University will not issue a Visa
Certificate of Eligibility (Form I-20) until an appropriate official at
the institution has reviewed the financial statement and determined
that the foreign applicant's sources of financial support are adequate
to cover his total expenses for the period of time the student is
seeking to enroll at the University.
