Brief Description of the Program:

        In an effort to serve the needs of South Florida's accountants and attorneys, we offer an innovative graduate program in taxation at Florida International University - The Executive Master of Science in Taxation (EMST).

        The EMST (customized to accommodate the seasonal time constraints of working tax professionals) is the only graduate tax program of its kind in the United States. EMST classes meet exclusively on Saturdays. No EMST classes are scheduled during "Tax Season."


        The Executive Master of Science in Taxation (EMST) program prepares students for entry and advancement in the specialized area of taxation. The program satisfies the 30 semester hours beyond a Bachelor’s degree required for the CPA examination.

Application Requirements:

To be eligible for admission to a Master’s degree program in the College of Business Administration, students must:
  • Meet the general University requirements for admission to a graduate degree program.
  • Hold a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in accounting or its equivalent (equivalence will be determined by the director of the School of Accounting).
  • CPA candidates with undergraduate majors other than accounting will be required to make up for any business and/or accounting deficiences based on a program of study designed to correct these difficiencies that is approved by the director of the School of Accounting.
  • Show high promise of success in graduate studies as determined by the faculty based upon a combination of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) (For attorneys, LSAT score may be used instead of GMAT).
  • Be in good standing with all previously-attended colleges and universities.


Additional Requirements for International Students:

  • If applicant is an international student whose native language is not English, he or she must have a minimum score of 580 on the paper-based TOEFL, 237 on the computer-based TOEFL, or an equivalent score on a comparable examination.
