Brief Description of the Program:

        Graduate study in Political Science typically leads to careers in government service (federal, state, and local), international business, teaching, professional research, and university administration.

        The M.A. degree requires successful completion of 30 credit hours, distributed as follows:
Required core ( 9 hours )

POS 5706 Research Methodology
POS 5716 Foundations of Political Science
POS 6976 Research Seminar (to be taken during last term, for supervised research project)

Secondary core ( 9 credits )

Three of the following four subfield seminars:
CPO 5091 Seminar in Comparative Politics
INR 5007 Seminar in International Politics
POS 5045 Seminar in American Politics
POT 5007 Seminar in Political Theory


Electives ( 12 credits )

Any 5000 or 6000 level Political Science courses. Two courses ( 6 credits ) may be taken from outside the Department, with prior approval from the Graduate Director. No more than 6 credits may be transferred from another university.


Application Requirements:
Admission to the Master’s program is competitive. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. The minimum requirements for admission to the M.A. program include:
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum 3.2 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) during the last two years of a student’s undergraduate program (students with graduate or professional course work will be evaluated individually).
  • A minimum combined score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections of the GRE.
  • Two letters of reference from former instructors who are able to evaluate the applicant’s potential for graduate study. Applicants should ensure that each letter is signed by the author along the sealed flap of the envelope.
  • A personal statement of intent, including a discussion of education and career objectives and the specific relationship of a Master’s or Doctoral degree in political science to the achievement of those objectives. The personal statement should not exceed three typewritten, double-spaced pages.

Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • Foreign students whose native language is not English must have a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 or higher.
