Brief Description of the Program:

        The program consists of 45 semester hours at the graduate level. This includes 15 semester hours of thesis work. The required courses consists of six semester hours credit in Mathematical Methods, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, and Advanced Electromagnetic Theory; three semester hours credit in Advanced Classical Mechanics and Statistical Physics. An additional three semester hours will be required in specialized course work emphasizing one of the areas of specialization in the department. These areas currently are atomic, molecular and optical physics, medium energy theoretical physics, astronomy, solid state physics, biophysics, polymer physics, and non-linear optics.


Application Requirements:
  • Students entering the Master's Program must have a B.S. degree or the equivalent in Physics or a closely related discipline.
  • Students must have a GPA of 3.0 average or higher at the undergraduate level.
  • A score of 1000 or higher on the Quantitative-Verbal sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • Students must arrange for at least two letters of recommendations from individuals qualified to comment on their suitability for enrollment in the masters program.

Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • International Students whose native language is not English must score at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
