Brief Description of the Program:

         The Doctoral program is a research-intensive degree emphasizing critical thinking and original problem solving. While the department’s strength is the interdisciplinary nature of the faculty research, particularly in the areas of environmental and biomedicinal chemistry, research projects in traditional areas of chemistry are also available to the students. The student typical chooses a series courses, which is focused in one of chemistry sub-disciplines, analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic or physical. The students are encouraged to take classes relevant to their specific interests and research projects. In addition the student can take courses in disciplines outside their sub-discipline as well as special topics courses. Students are required to pass a series of exams, write defend an original proposal and their dissertation.


Application Requirements:
  • A minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.0/4.0 in chemistry and cognate science and GRE score of 1000 (verbal + quantitative) or greater is required.
  • Every student entering the graduate program in chemistry will be required to take two entrance/proficiency examinations covering standard undergraduate-level material in organic chemistry and physical chemistry (thermodynamics and kinetics).

Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in the English language by presenting a minimum score of 550 or higher paper-based and a minimum score of 213 computer-based on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • Certification of financial ability.
  • Medical insurance.
