Brief Description of the Program:

        The Master of Science in Civil Engineering builds upon course work as well as research. The student is encouraged to specialize in a defined area of Civil Engineering, but may find it desirable to pursue a more general program of studies combining subject material from different areas of Civil Engineering and interdisciplinary related courses. The degree is available with a thesis or non-thesis (project) option. The thesis option entails a minimum of six credits of research and the submission of a thesis for successful completion. The non-thesis program must be supported by the successful completion of a project and a report of substantial engineering content for a minimum of three credits. All students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of thirty(30) semester credits, which includes a minimum of twelve credits of graduate courses in the specialty area.

The areas of specialty are Structures, Mechanics, Geotechnical, Construction, Transportation, Water Resources.

Application Requirements:
  • A student seeking admission into Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering graduate program must have a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related engineering or equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • All graduate applicants, regardless of previous grade point average or degrees, are required to submit their GRE (general) scores.
  • An applicant must present either a "B" average in upper level undergraduate work, or
  • A combined score of 1000 or higher on the verbal and quantitative sections of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or
  • A graduate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Three letters of recommendation in the forms provided by the department.
  • A statement of objective in which the intended concentration must be clearly stated.

Additional Requirements for International Students:
  • Foreign students seeking admission must have a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related engineering from an institution recognized in its own country as preparing students for further study at the graduate level.
  • Foreign students must submit a TOEFL score of 500 or higher.
