Over the years, guest lecturers have been effective
additions to my courses. Guest lecturers break the monotony
of a solo professor throughout the semester and serve
to reinforce course material previously covered in a
less structured setting.
I spearheaded submission of a proposal that was funded
by NIH through the Minority Access to Research Careers
(MARC) Program, to develop a plan that would add more
quantitative sciences to the biology curriculum. As
Project Director, I’ve put together a team of
13 faculty from Biology, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer
Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry & Physics
to work on our Q`BIC Plan (Quantifying Biology in the
Classroom). We actively worked on this plan for over
a year and a half and submitted an implementation proposal
to NIH in September 2005. As well, I was an active participant
in the National Academies of Sciences Summer Institutes
on Undergraduate Education in Biology in August 2004.
All of the above continue to help me be a better teacher
and mentor.
