PURPOSE

To serve the needs of the practicing/professional anthropologist, potential students, and the interested public. To provide resources to stay abreast of career opportunities, training activities and materials, and innovative ways of employing anthropology in real world problem solving. Web pages and Internet resources in applied anthropology are produced by numerous organizations and individuals, their pages are scattered and difficult to locate. AppliedAnthro.net serves as a central clearing house for links to these resources.

FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

The founding principles of AppliedAnthro.net and "Applied Anthropology: Careers and Resources" are to:

1) promote a stronger presence for applied and practicing anthropology in the profession;

2) serve as a central information clearinghouse to resources in applied/practicing anthropology for the profession, students and the public;

3) facilitate networking between professional organizations in order enhance the coordination, management and development of support services for applied/practicing anthropologists; and

4) enhance the visibility of applied and practicing anthropology to the general public, such as potential employers , media, etc.

AAA/SfAA COMMISSION ON APPLIED/PRACTICING ANTHROPOLOGY

The Commission identified the development of a web portal as a specific project that would help promote a stronger presence for applied and practicing anthropology in the profession.

The AAA/SfAA Commission on Applied/Practicing Anthropology was initiated by the Presidents of the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Applied Anthropology in 2002. Its mission is:

1. To facilitate and promote career development for anthropologists.
2. To facilitate and promote organizational development within anthropology.
3. To sustain and, when necessary, create links among practitioners and organizations.
4. To identify new needs and responses to foster excellence and growth within the discipline.

The Commission facilitates the Community of Anthropology Professionals by linking university departments, anthropological associations, and practitioner organizations to promote applied and practicing anthropology within the discipline.
