Professional Compliance

To further our goals of maintaining both police performance and police/community relations, the FIU Police Department encourages citizen recommendations for improving our policing. We welcome the commendation of police personnel who admirably perform their duties, and we encourage questions or complaints about the department’s performance or actions of its members.

Please help us to better serve you by observing the following steps if you should ever have a complaint or wish to offer a commendation:

FOR A COMPLAINT

  • Ask to speak to the employee’s supervisor.
  • Explain your complaint to the supervisor.
  • If appropriate, the supervisor will resolve the matter directly.
  • Otherwise, the supervisor will provide you with a formal complaint package that you can fill out, sign, and return to that supervisor.
  • The department will investigate the complaint and take appropriate action in accordance with the findings.
  • You will receive written notification of the determination made by the department regardless of the outcome.
FOR A COMMENDATION
  • Ask to speak with the employee’s supervisor and verbally express your praise, or
  • You can write a letter to the Chief of Police explaining your praise.
  • Commendations received by the Chief of Police for any Police employee result in the employee being advised of your gratitude.
  • The employee’s actions and your appreciation are permanently entered into their personnel file.
