Attention Biology Majors:    Announcement of the Marta Montiel de Cuervo Prize for  2007-2008

 

The annual Marta Montiel de Cuervo Prize was established in 2003 to reward excellence in the biological sciences. The award comes with a check for $500 to be presented when the award is announced. The recipient will also receive a plaque to be presented at the Arts & Sciences Awards Ceremony in April. In addition, a plaque will be displayed in the office of the Department, and will have engraved on it the name of each annual recipient.

 

Criteria for the Marta Montiel de Cuervo Prize:

 

  1. Degree-seeking undergraduate majoring in the Biological Sciences (BS Biology or BS Marine Biology) in the College of Arts and Sciences. At the time of selection, each applicant must have senior standing (at least 90 credits).
  2. At least 30 credits completed at FIU.
  3. A cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or higher in all courses taken at FIU.
  4. Earned a B+ or higher in the following lower division Biology prerequisite courses:

BSC 1010 + L General Biology I, BSC 1011 + L General Biology II

CHM 1045 + L General Chemistry I, CHM 1046 + L General Chemistry II

CHM 2210 + L Organic Chemistry I, CHM 2211 + L Organic Chemistry II

MAC 2311 Calculus I, MAC 2312 Calculus II

PHY 2048 + L, PHY 2049 + L Physics I and II with Calculus (preferably),

  or PHY 2053, PHY 2048L, PHY 2054, PHY 2049L Physics I and II without Calculus

 

Application and Selection Procedure:

 

  1. The Undergraduate Committee of the Dept. of Biological Sciences will make the annual selection.
  2. Students must supply to the Committee:
    1. A cover page with name of applicant, contact information (phone number and e-mail address), expected date of graduation, names of two (2) Biology faculty members who will be sending letters of reference on their behalf
    2. A personal statement of not more than 2 pages explaining (a) why they are worthy of this award and (b) what they plan to do after graduation.
    3. Unofficial transcript(s)
  3. Students must request confidential letters of recommendation from two (2) Biology Dept. faculty members who know the student well and can comment on academic as well as personal attributes. These recommendation letters are to be addressed to the Biology Department Undergraduate Committee and given by the faculty member to Helen Forlong or Carola Martinez in OE 167.
  4. All documents must be received by Friday, November 16, 2007 at 4 PM.
