        COMPUTER LABS

        Campus-wide

University Technology Services (UTS) supports general purpose "open" and instructional computer lab facilities for FIU students and faculty. FIU students are free to use the "open" and unused instructional labs to do their homework or computer class assignments. FIU faculty can use the instructional labs to teach and/or to develop new educational modules for both internal and external institutional use.

Computing labs are located on the fourth floor of the PC Building, and on the second floor of the Green Library (GL Building) on the University Park Campus. The Biscayne Bay Campus has facilities in the ACI Building. Operating hours are specific to each lab and are available by calling 305-348-2174 at University Park or on the BayNET Computing Hours Page.

FIU units support five different operating system and hardware environments. While most labs have PCs running: (1) Windows 98/2000 and (2) Windows NT, there are also labs with (3) Macintosh OS computers and a Sun Workstation Lab (see below) that caters to faculty and student research instruction and projects that require software applications that run on the: (4) Unix and (5) LINUX operating systems.

Printing services are available at all lab locations.

        Department Computer Lab

The Department of Political Science has a computer lab available to graduate students in the department with printing services.  The computers run Windows 98 and includes connection to FIU's network, internet access, a recent version of SPSS, and word-processing software, such as the Microsoft Office 2000 suite, among other software titles.  Please contact the department for more information.

Viruses are often sent via email and are hidden in emails that appear to have been sent from people you know. Thus, if your antivirus software on your office computer needs updating, please contact IRM immediately. It is recommended to update your virus definitions every two weeks.
