Financial Aid

The program has a limited number of Graduate Assistantships available for qualified students.  Assistantships include a  stipend and tuition support.  Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis, and only full-time graduate students are eligible.  All students applying for the program on a full-time basis may be considered  for these awards.  Most students receiving assistantships are assigned to individual faculty members for 20 hours a week as teaching and research assistants.  Assistantships are renewable for a maximum four years based, but are predicated upon satisfactory academic progress.

Applicants who have a scholarly interest in the Caribbean may qualify and are encouraged to apply for a limited number of Mellon Fellowships sponsored by the University's Latin American and Caribbean Center.  For more information regarding Mellon Fellowships please call the Latin American and Caribbean Center at (305) 348-2894.

The University also grants “need based” financial aid.  For information on these awards call the Financial Aid Department at (305) 348-2431.  Students who are U.S. citizens or resident aliens, but not legal residents of the State of Florida, are strongly encouraged to meet requirements for Florida residency as soon as possible.  Eligible students should begin this process before they begin their first semester of study in the program.  The difference in tuition fees is significant, and the department will be able to support more in-state than out-of-state students.
