| Research Interest |
| I started out as a
labor historian investigating the social history of U.S. automobile workers
before unionization. My current focus on twentieth century women’s history
maintains an interest in social class as it relates to gender. I am
particularly interested in changing ideology about, and experience of, emotional
life. This interest stems from an attempt to examine changing conceptions
and experiences of motherhood. I continue to explore motherhood both in individual
biography and in a larger social and cultural context. |
| Teaching Interest |
|
My teaching
is focused on the areas of gender and history, particularly the history of
women in the context of the history of the United States. As a member
of the History Department, I
teach U.S. Women’s History; as a member of the Humanities Program I teach
Women, Gender, and Culture; as a member of the Women’s Studies affiliated faculty,
I teach Female/Male: An Introduction to Women’s Studies. My teaching
interest include working within the Department of History, the Women’s Studies
BA degree, and the Humanities Program. My courses focus on the interdisciplinary
nature of gender studies, asking students to see women and men within a complex
cultural framework. In Spring 2003, I will be teaching IDS 4920/HUM 4920 – Life Stories: Biographical
Studies# (click here for course syllabus).
