The Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church
Papal elections of the XXI Century (2005)
Conclave of April 18 to 19, 2005
(Benedict XVI)
Pope John Paul II died in the Vatican on April 2, 2005. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, bishop of the title of the suburbicarian sees of Ostia and Velletri-Segni, dean of the College of Cardinals, was chosen his successor. He took the name Benedict XVI. One-hundred and fifteen of the one-hundred-seventeen cardinal electors participated in the conclave to elect the new pope. It has been the most numerous conclave in the history of the Church. Two cardinal electors could not attend for health reasons. Sixty-six cardinals could not participate in the election for having turned eighty years of age. Seventy-seven votes were required to be elected by two-thirds of the electors and fifty-eight to be elected by an absolute majority of them. The date in parentheses indicates the year in which they were promoted to the cardinalate.
