Academic News

Since the approval of our Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology in October, 2001 we have seen strong growth in enrollments. All signs indicate that growth will continue in the coming Fall. The first graduate of our program was Kelly Mahon, and we have several seniors approaching the final stages of completing the degree. This degree plan closely resembles an aqueous, halophilic version of the BS degree in Biological Sciences.

For the current year, we have added a minor in marine biology and two additional courses to the list of acceptable upper-division electives. This expands the choice of upper division electives from eight to ten, of which four are required. The courses newly approved by the FIU Curriculum Committee are Marine Microbial Ecology and Endocrinology.

Prospective students interested in enrolling in the program, or adding a marine biology minor, or those considering transferring are invited to contact the department.

Latest enrollment news

Recent enrollment data show as many as 107 registered Marine Biology majors.

Coming Soon

Currently under development is a set of competitive scholarships for out-of-state students enrolling at FIU as Marine Biology majors. Watch here for details as the details for this upcoming special opportunity become available.

One or more Honors tracks will be available in the near future. We are working closely with the Honors College and with our Vice President for Research to establish unique educational opportunity for very highly motivated Marine Biology Students - watch for updates as FIU Marine Biology Honors becomes a reality! We are also supervising Honors College research projects through the Marine Biology program; interested students enrolled in the Honors College are encouraged to call or send an email for details.

Continuing

We are also pleased to continue our cooperative Summer Marine Institute with the North Miami Beach High School Science Magnet Program, during the Summer B semester. This program allows advanced high school science students to take lower division university courses using the Dual Enrollment program
