Alumni

Alumni of the Liberal Studies program have continued their education in numerous graduate and professional schools. Students interested in furthering their studies should choose their courses wisely so that they take all relevant prerequisites needed in their program of choice. Other alumni have gone directly into the work force and have been successful in employment ranging from middle and upper level management positions in business to art museum direction. Because the program is interdisciplinary, it allows students to study a wide range of topics and follow various interesting academic pursuits after graduation.

The Liberal Studies program is proud of the many fine achievements of our graduates. Shawn Denight, a 1984 graduate, received the esteemed and prestigious Best Teacher in Dade County Award in 1992.

Natalya Fateyeva, a Summer 1998 Liberal Studies graduate, received her Masters degree in the TESOL program in the College of Education here at FIU in Fall 2001.  She currently teaches at Broward County Public Schools and at Miami-Dade Community College.

In Fall 1999, Annie Vazquez received her BA in Liberal Studies and then went on to write her own column in the Neighbors Section of the Miami Herald.  In her very interesting column, Annie describes the many experiences available in the South Florida area.

Another graduate we are very proud of is Dr. Charlyne Walker. A 1992 Liberal Studies graduate, Charlyne obtained her Masters degree in Adult Education in 1995, and went on to receive her Ph.D. in Educational Technology from Barry University in 1999. She teaches several Computer Science courses.

In the Spring 2002 semester, the following Liberal Studies students received the Outstanding Academic Achievement Award:

  • Gabrielle Antoine completed her BA here at FIU with distinction in the Fall 2001 semester.  She is now working in the Planning and Institutional Research office at UM and will be starting the MBA program in January 2003.
  • Riccardo Antolini graduated in the Spring 2002 semester.  He emphasized the artistic focus of our program by taking many of his electives in Music.  He has been a musician for the past 13 years and developed his own record label.  He plans to help promote young artists both locally and globally.
  • Ileana Munoz  received her AA from Miami Dade and then worked in the Personnel Department of Miami Dade County for 13 years before coming to FIU to fulfill her dream and receive her BA degree.  She has caught the academic bug and would like to continue her education with a Masters degree in Public Administration.
  • Michael Murphy excels at whatever he pursues.  He is a veteran of the United States Army and received several military honors.  After earning his AA degree with highest honors from Miami Dade, he came to FIU and has continued his outstanding performance here.  He has been accepted by several law schools and plans to concentrate in the area of worker's compensation.

The exceptional achievement of our students is a source of pride for us and we are sure that they will continue to make a positive impact after they have received their Liberal Studies degrees.
