PRESENT RESEARCH ACTIVITY

For the past 25 years, since my work in Malaysia, virtually all of my research has been in the area of functional ecology, almost exclusively of tropical plants.  My work continues to be mostly tropical, but some of the phenomena have led me back to temperate plants.  Long-term interests in the cultures of south and southeast Asia, the result of living in these areas has led to a minor research interests in the relationships of these cultures to their environments.  These research interests are summarized under the following headings.

Tropical rainforest at the Pasoh  Rainforest Preserve,

Negri Sembilan,
West Malaysia.

DEVELOPMENTAL ECOLOGY OF PLANTS IN NATURAL SHADE

EVERGLADES PLANTS

THE PHYTOCHEMISTRY OF TROPICAL RAINFOREST CANOPIES

THE FUNCTION OF ANTHOCYANINS IN LEAVES

STRUCTURAL COLORATION IN PLANTS

ATTITUDES TOWARDS NATURE IN THE ASIAN TROPICS

Tropical rainforest understory,
Bukit Lagang Rainforest Reserve,
West Malaysia.

Much of my research has focused on understory environments, particularly of irradiance and plant adaptations to extreme shade.
