iNET
and the Fall 2000 Freshman Class
Freshmen
entering the university in summer and fall 2000 will be
a part of the iNET Project designed to enhance students'
use of computers and technology in both their course work
and communications with various academic and administrative
support services.
A
major component of iNET is the requirement that all entering
freshmen have an active e-mail address with the university.
While many students have ISP's and e-mail accounts at home,
a university address ensures that faculty and academic support
services can communicate with students in a timely manner.
Campus e-mail can be forwarded to an e-mail address at home
to assure a seamless flow of access to information.
Freshmen
attending Orientation programs in July and August will establish
their e-mail account and activate it in one of the campus
computer labs. Staff will be available in the labs to provide
instruction and necessary technical support for sign-on.
A series of additional training modules including information
literacy and e-mail/Web uses, are planned for the fall term
through the First-Year Experience course and English courses.
This summer, faculty are planning and developing Web based
or Web enhanced courses to be offered in the fall term.
Students
who begin classes in summer term will receive e-mail access
instructions through their First-Year Experience course
and, in fall term, gain additional instruction in their
English classes.
While the iNET Project focuses specifically on freshmen,
all students are eligible to establish e-mail accounts with
the university, have access to web registration, and may
enroll in web-based courses. Many of the academic programs
are actively using web-based courses in major courses and,
increasingly, expect students to have mastered basic computer
skills by the time they reach the junior level.
In
the coming weeks, watch for new additions to this iNET web
page including lists of fall term courses using web-based
technology. Also look for a list of recommended guidelines
and specifications if you plan to purchase a new computer
this year.
