|
Department of HistoryWELCOME!The Department of History at FIU offers graduate and undergraduate programs that foster a love for historical inquiry and lay a foundation for successful careers in history, law, journalism, government service, librarianship, and other professions. We invite you to explore our web site, contact us for more details, or visit. UndergraduatesFor undergraduate majors the Bachelor of Arts program helps students acquire knowledge and skills for careers in teaching, the study of law, national and international business, and government service, among other career tracks. We offer a broad array of courses at FIU's two main campuses -- University Park and Biscayne Bay -- to serve students in the course of our scholarly mission as a research university. GraduatesGraduate students can pursue M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in our department. Three flexible tracks are offered in the Master of Arts program: a thesis option, report option, or public history. Our Ph.D. Program in Atlantic History is rooted in the premise that the Atlantic Ocean has been the corridor for sweeping exchanges of peoples, technologies, and ideas. The program stresses comparative approaches, especially involving Europe, Africa, and the Americas. This approach provides innovative trans-national training in the history of the Atlantic world from pre-colonial to modern times. The History Faculty has special strengths in the history of Latin America, Europe, the United States, and Africa. Members of the History Faculty have earned national and international grants and awards for their scholarship. ResourcesA Carnegie Research-Extensive institution, FIU is one of the largest universities in the State of Florida system, with over 38,000 students. Courses are offered at the University Park and Biscayne Bay campuses, and at the Wolfsonian Museum on South Beach. The Green Library contains over 1,000,000 volumes and subscribes to over 10,000 scholarly journals and 275 electronic databases. Its Archives and Manuscripts Collections Department contains significant resources for the study of South Florida and the Caribbean. The history collection is especially strong on Argentina, Colombia and Cuba. Colonial Cuban documents are well represented in the Levi Marrero manuscripts, in the Special Collections of the Green Library. The libraries are European Union and United Nations depositories, hold the Yale University Latin American and Spanish documents collection in microfilm form, and provide access to digitized portions of collections of the Archive of the Indies and select Spanish archives. History graduate students benefit from departmental ties with our Latin American and Caribbean Center, Cuban Research Institute, African-New World Studies program, the Working Group for Pre-Modern Histories and Cultures, and the Wolfsonian Museum. The Department also has agreements with various universities and research centers such as the Escuela de Estudios Hispanoamericanos in Seville, which have benefited many students embarking on research projects in the Archive of the Indies. A similar agreement through the LACC provides an institutional base in Cochabamba, Bolivia. Students have worked with several Latin American universities, including the Universidad Católica in Lima, Peru, and the Universidad Nacional in Bogotá, Colombia. Full-time, degree-seeking graduate students are funded throughout the 12-month calendar year through Teaching Assistantships and Fellowships. The student body and our history faculty are as diverse as the University’s name implies, making the Department of History an ideal location to prepare for the challenges of the twenty-first century world. |
