Graduate Program

The Department of History offers both an MA and a Ph.D. in History. We offer the nation's first and most experienced doctoral program in Atlantic History. It provides innovative cross-national training in the history of the Atlantic world from pre-colonial times to the modern era. Both graduate programs require concentration in African, European, Latin American or US history.

Exceptionally strong financial support is offered to doctoral students on a competitive basis. The department offers Teaching Assistantships to doctoral students throughout the 12-month calendar year, giving continuous opportunities to work closely with members of the faculty and to master best practices in teaching. Continuous year-long support also advantages the progress toward degree completion. In addition to providing highly competite stipends, teaching assistantships also cover tuition.

The graduate student community is vibrant, diverse in origins and rich in intellectual interests. The Graduate Student Society (DOHGSA) offers opportunities for sponsored talks and academic activitites. Graduate students also benefit from linkages with FIU's Latin American and Caribbean Center, Cuban Research Institute, African-New World Studies program, and the Wolfsonian Museum.
