The Department of History
offers both an MA and a Ph.D. in History. The doctoral program in Atlantic Civilization
provides innovative cross-national training in the history of the
Atlantic world from pre-colonial times to the modern era. Both graduate
programs require concentration in African, European,
Latin American or
US history.
There is a large graduate
community, of over 70 students, with a Graduate
Student Society (DOHGSA) within the Department. The
department is able to offer substantial Teaching Assistantships, giving
the opportunity to work closely with a faculty member and to begin
mastering the practice of teaching. History department graduate
students publish their own journal, The Atlantic Millennium.
Graduate students can benefit
from departmental ties with FIU's Latin
American and Caribbean Center, Cuban
Research Institute, African-New World
Studies program, and the Wolfsonian Museum.
Graduate students are eligible to apply for the Kislak Prize and for
membership in Phi Alpha Theta.
If you have any questions about
the program, do not hesitate to contact the Director of Graduate
Studies, Professor Sherry Johnson.
