Doctoral Program Self-Study / Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate

The Department of History is engaged in a study of its doctoral program during 2008. It is using as part of its model several of the mechanisms used by the Carnegie Foundation for the Avancement of Teaching and its Initiative on the Doctorate. FIU will thus join 16 other departments of history, among, including those at Arizona State University, Duke, The Ohio State University, University of Connecticut, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Texas at Austin, and several others, in a comprehensive inquiry into the nature and scope of doctoral tranining, mentorship and the preparation of future stewards of our discipline.

The self-study will comprise several stages and different elements, among which are comprehensive surveys involving both students and faculty. The doctoral student survey can be found here.

The results of the graduate student survey are given in two parts: the summary quantitive results and the text comments/responses.
