The above should be sent to:
Office of
Graduate Admission,

University Park
Miami,
Florida 33199 USA
Students should also arrange that two (2)
letters of recommendation be sent directly to the Director of Graduate
Studies, Department of History, Florida International University,
University Park, Miami, Florida, 33199 USA. These letters should
evaluate the applicant's preparation in history studies as well as
their chances for success in a graduate history program. Ph.D.
program applicants should also send their writing sample, statement of
pupose, and letter of interest in being a T.A. (if applicable) directly
to the Director of Graduate Studies and not to the Graduate Admissions
Office.
The application deadline for Fall
Semester admission is January 15 for the Ph.D. program and February 15
for the M.A. program. The application deadline for Spring
Semester
admission is October 15 regardless of which program is selected.
For the MA, applicants must have an
undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4 point scale
and, for students whose native language is not English, a TOEFL score
of
at least 575. Students who fail to meet these minimum requirements may
be considered in exceptional circumstances. Please
inquire with the Director of Graduate Studies.
Applicants must have completed at least 12
semester-hours (on the basis of 3-hour courses) in undergraduate
courses in the field of History. Applicants who do not fulfill this
requirement may address the deficiency by successfully completing 3
undergraduate (3000-4000 level) History courses at FIU prior to
acceptance into the FIU MA programs. These courses can be taken by
registering under the category of "Special Student," and will not count
toward the MA. (Consult the University Graduate Catalog and the Office
of Admissions.) The student must obtain at least the grade of "B" in
these courses before applying to the graduate programs.
For the PhD, every applicant must supply
copies of a curriculum vitae, college transcripts, at least two letters
of recommendation, and GRE scores (1100 is the normal minimal score
required for admission to the doctoral program). The GRE History
specialty examination is not required, but scores may be submitted if
available. For students whose native language is not English, the TOEFL
exam is required, with a score of a least 575.
Admission to the program
requires an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 at a minimum. Applicants with
M.A. degrees are required to have a graduate GPA of at least 3.25. A
writing sample should be included in the application. For those
transferring into the program who already hold the MA, the thesis, when
available, should be submitted as the sample. Finally, a short
statement addressing the student's goals and objectives in pursuing the
doctorate in history is also required.
The Graduate Record Examination and TOEFL
scores and the undergraduate grade point average are minimum
requirements. All applications are reviewed by the Graduate Studies
Committee which makes the final admissions decisions.
