Academic Learning Compact: History

Mission Statement

The mission of the history department is to provide students with an understanding of past times and cultures, an understanding of the world in which we live based on an understanding of the past, and to provide a knowledge base in the discipline. The program also provides training in critical thinking skills, research, and writing.

Student Learning Outcomes

FIU History graduates should be able to do the following:

Content/Discipline Knowledge

1. Apply the concepts that historians use in their discipline to a variety of periods and regions.

2. Demonstrate competence in the cultural, political, social, historical, and geo-political parameters of a number of periods and regions.

Critical Thinking

1.Engage in systematic historical analysis

2.Gather evidence, construct an argument, analyze and draw conclusions.

Oral and Written Communication

1. Develop and deliver effective oral and written presentations on historical subjects.
