University Health Services provides a Travel Clinic to assist FIU students and faculty/staff with obtaining the latest health information, advisories, and immunizations pertinent to the geographic area of their future travel.

  1. Go the CDC Travel Web site at http://www.cdc.gov/travel/ to obtain the latest health information and advisories for your specific travel destination, required and recommended vaccinations and medications specific for your travel destination, common diseases related to travel, mosquito and tick protection, food and water safety, avian flu information, resources, and frequently asked questions. The web site also features time zones and various topics related to travel medicine.

  2. Call the FIU General Medical Clinic at 305-348-2401 (University Park) or 305-919-5620 (Biscayne Bay Campus) to make an appointment at the Travel clinic to see a registered nurse practitioner. You will need to make your appointment at least 3-4 weeks in advance of your departure date so the appropriate lab work and vaccinations can be done. Please note, not all recommended vaccines are available at our clinics. If the vaccines are not routinely available, the clinic staff will direct you to local agencies where the vaccines are available.

To reduce your risk of infection while away from home, you must :

    1. protect yourself from insects,
    2. ensure the quality of the water (including ice cubes) and food (including how the food is prepared)
    3. be knowledgeable about potential diseases in the region to be visited. The most frequently reported illness is traveler's diarrhea.
Common diseases transmitted by insects: Malaria, Yellow Fever

Common diseases transmitted by contaminated water and food: Cholera (a bacteria causing severe diarrhea), Typhoid Fever (caused by a bacteria), Hepatitis A (caused by a virus), and several parasites.

Diseases that can be transmitted by intimate contact with other people: HIV (caused by a virus), Hepatitis B (caused by a virus) -- both are acquired sexually or by exposure to blood infected by the virus.

Other diseases: Rabies (caused by a virus that is transmitted by mammal bites); Schistosomiasis (caused by the larva of a flatworm that penetrates your skin)

You can also obtain the latest CDC travel information directly from this FIU Student Health Services web site. Click on the following external link to reveal a map of the world. To receive health information on any geographic area, simply click on the appropriate area of the map. Note: When you have obtained the information from the external site, please use the "back" key on your web browser to return to the FIU Student Health Services web site.

BON VOYAGE!!
