Becoming an Officer

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) and Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) afford valuable networking experience to give members a head-start on their chosen career path. At the College level, the Florida International University Florida Water Environment Association (FIU FWEA) also offers student members an opportunity to gain leadership experience that could mean the difference between getting the job you want, or having it go to another qualified candidate. By becoming an officer, you'll gain insight into the workings of the Federation and the FWEA, have opportunities to participate in credited-special projects, and develop the leadership talents that you can take into the workplace. You'll develop valuable on-campus contacts that can help you break into today's tough job market.

Perhaps, more importantly, however, you'll have chance to make a real contribution--to help shape the only student organization on campus devoted to the water environment, to help educate other student's about the water environment and to make some new friends!

The following is taken from Article V of the Constitution and Bylaws for the FWEA.

The chapter is organized into five Major Offices. General elections are held the first week in December, with the newly-elected officials beginning their term on January 10, of the following year. The office of President and Vice president are for a one year period. The offices of Secretary, Treasurer and Marshall are for a minimum of two academic semesters. The officers preside in the following order: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Marshal.

The major officers shall be part-time undergraduate (9 credits), graduate (6 credit), and post-graduate with a full-time obligation.

All officers are required to maintain a notebook, which includes records of all transactions and correspondence. The notebook may be considered for inclusion in the annual report.

List of Officer's Duties

President

Preside over all general meetings.
Oversee all functions of the chapter.
Have a voice and vote in all committee decisions.
Be a co-signer on the checking account with the Treasurer.
Handle any special workshops with the assistance of the Faculty Advisor.
Be responsible for all public relations of the Chapter, unless otherwise stated.
Be responsible for coordination of an annual report of the chapter activities to the Association and the Federation's Student Activities Committee by May 1 of each year.
Be the intermediary between the Chapter and the Association.

Vice-President

Perform the duties of the President in the absences of that officer.
Be responsible for the proper functioning of all committees and assist the President
Oversee the Marshall and all Committees formed by the Executive Board.
Coordinate all field trips, social, sporting, and charity events for the Chapter.

Secretary

Keep minutes of all general and Executive Board meetings. The minutes of the federal meeting shall be posted in a timely manner.
Notify all members of all general meetings and of other business conducted by the chapter.
Be responsible for compiling and submitting an annual report of the chapter activities to the Association and the Federation's Student Activities Committee by May 1 of each year.
Be the head of the Membership and Communication Committee.
keep an accurate account of members and record attendance at meetings.

Treasurer

Be custodian of all chapter funds.
Be authorized to distribute funds by co-signature.
Be responsible for supplying membership applications for the Association and maintaining a record of all active members.
Be responsible for submitting annual report. The Treasurer's report must be submitted in a timely manner.

Marshall

Be in charge of all membership activities and membership queries.
Be the intermediary between the Chapter, the Society of Clubs, and Student Government Association.
Be Sergeant-at-Arms at the general meetings.
Provide for Security at Chapter events.

Elections

Regular elections will be held in the first week of December for President and Vice President. Elections for the Secretary, Treasurer, and Marshall shall be held as deemed necessary by the board to fill vacant offices. Sufficient notice must be given prior to the election.

In keeping with the stated objectives of the club, we want to extend our educational outreach to as many students as possible, and cordially invite students from all majors and the many disciplines working in the water environment industry to join us. As the only on-campus organization devoted to the application of technology in the environmental field, the FIU FWEA offers a rewarding experience to many students and is working hard to establish itself as a solid University presence.
