For the freedom of colonial Cuba he fought, and died. Against the totalitarian rule of Spain he wrote.

Like bones to the human body, the axle to the wheel, the wing to the bird, and the air to the wing, so is liberty the essence of life. Whatever is done without it is imperfect.

The words of José Martí still inspire but his hands could use some help. A statue of Martí stands in Havana in remembrance of his revolutionary struggle; a city restoration worker repairs two of Martí's fingers in an attempt to maintain his monumental status.
