THE PRESERVE NATURE TRAIL

In 1987-88 Mabel Miller, a noted local environmental educator mainly associated with the Key Biscayne Nature Center, took special credits to work on a nature trail for the Preserve. She developed a trail route and information points to take advantage of both the pine rocklands community on the northern half and the tropical hardwood hammock on the southern half of the Preserve. The trail has 20 such information points, each marked by a numeral on a wooden post. Mabel also wrote an informative booklet, with background about south Florida plant communities and information about plants at the information points, that we published. The booklet allowed students to walk along the nature trail and learn about south Florida Ecology.
The Nature Trail was dedicated by President Maidique in 1989. It has remained open most of the time since then, but has been damaged from time to time by vandals. In the summer of 2003 the trail was refurbished by EVR student Janine Bacquie. The trail guide is available from the Environmental Studies office, or as a PDF downloadable from this site (large file 8Mb!).
