Research Interests

  • Acute and chronic toxicological effects of contaminants on freshwater, saltwater and terrestrial organisms
  • Development of sediment and soil criteria
  • Use of outdoor simulated microcosms to evaluate effects of contaminants
  • Probabilistic ecological risk assessment of pesticides, hazardous wastes and industrial chemicals
  • Toxicity identification evaluation of effluents

Dr. Rand manages the Southeast Environmental Research Center state-of-the-art Ecotoxicology laboratory situated on Biscayne Bay. The facility is equipped to conduct soil, sediment, freshwater and saltwater ecotoxicity studies. The laboratory contains a culture room, an environmental chamber for static studies, and a toxicity exposure room with computer-controlled water-flow and sediment systems for long-term studies. The instrument room is equipped with a hood, refrigerator, muffle furnace, balance, water quality meters, microscopes, water bath, shaker, incubator and spectrophotometer. Outdoor freshwater and saltwater microcosm studies can also be conducted on-site all year round.

Biography

Gary M. Rand received his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University and was a National Institute of Health postdoctoral research training fellow in Toxicology at North Carolina State University. Following his graduate education, he was a corporate toxicologist in the oil, chemical and utility industries for 20 years. He was responsible for conducting ecotoxicology studies and preparing ecological risk assessments for hazardous waste sites and on pesticides and industrial chemicals for product registration. At FIU he is conducting pioneering ecotoxicology studies in South Florida aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems from the St. Lucie River Watershed to Everglades and Biscayne National Parks.
