Program Requirements:
Courses
The program consists of 13 courses/ 39 semester hours. Students must complete 3 credit hours in the Professional Studies Core, 21 credit hours in Required Courses, and 15 credit hours of advisor approved electives.
The Professional Studies Core and the Required Courses consist of classes that reflect the range of basic knowledge common to all higher education professionals. Whatever the job function, it is imperative for university professionals to understand the law and student culture, in addition to remaining abreast of current issues in the field.
Electives: Students will work with an advisor to develop a plan of study that addresses the student’s primary area of interest and immediate career goals within higher education administration. Advisors work with students to decide on an appropriate elective track within the available courses. Possible tracks include student affairs administration, leadership and management, public policy, community college leadership, and international education.
Capstone Experience
Students may choose from an action research project, thesis, comprehensive exam, or similar experience based upon their future goals in consultation with Higher Education program faculty.
Practicum Experience
A Practicum Experience is a requirement that will allow for guided practical experience in university administration. The practicum sections provide students the opportunity to earn credit while gaining valuable hands-on experience in a variety of administrative areas. Practicum sections will include an academic component designed by the Higher Education faculty and the site supervisor. While three credit hours of practicum are required, students may take up to six credits in order to explore other professional areas within higher education, test out interests, or gain advanced experience. Practicums are approved by the advisor. Students are encouraged to take EDH 6045 College Student Development Theory before their first practicum; exceptions should to be approved by the advisor.
