Sixteen faculty were present. Announcements: * Laura De Carli will give up her place on the Curriculum Committee to Laura Ghezzi (the 1st Alternate) to allow Prof Ghezzi a service opportunity before tenure. Likewise, Theodore Tachim-Medjo requests our support in elections for FIU committees. Julian supported this idea, and requested similar support for Tom Leness. * Panthersoft will not enforce pre-reqs for Calculus 1 in time for Summer 2006 classes. It seems to be working OK for prereqs in general. * If you want to give an override in a Calc or DE class, give the student's Panther ID number to Julian. Motions: * Steve Hudson proposed several cosmetic changes to the dept's Third Year Review Policy. Passed by a large margin. * Hamid Meziani proposed one-credit labs be attached to our three credit Advanced DE and Math Modelling courses, to allow the instructor to include MATLAB in these courses. Each instructor has the option to include the lab, or not. Also, each student has the option to sign up for the lab, or not. Passed by a large margin, this will go on to the Curriculum Committee. * Julian Edward proposed that Summer term Calculus instructors be paid for three credits (due to Summer budget problems), with the fourth credit banked in the dept log. There was some discussion of how this would affect retirement pay, and the summer algorithm, and how the motion should be worded. Julian will write it up and send out a mail ballot. * Julian stated that our merit point system is not a complete merit policy. He proposed appointing an ad hoc merit raise committee, to write a permanent merit policy for the dept. There were no objections. S.H.
