FAQ’s

What's an “Academic Unit?”

  • Academic Units are the Schools and Colleges that comprise the University.
  • Each has a specific educational mission and specific majors. (e.g. Biology belongs to the College of Arts and Sciences while Criminal Justice belongs to the College of Health and Urban Affairs.)
  • University students are not officially admitted into one of the Academic Units until they are Juniors or Seniors and have met the entrance requirements of the Unit.
  • Which academic unit you go to depends on which major you select. (Not the Sorting Hat.)

While everybody coming to FIU must fulfill the University-wide requirements, each school or college has a unique set of requirements of its own.  For instance, a student in the School of Architecture doesn't have to worry about the College of Art and Sciences requirements, just those set by the School of Architecture.  Likewise, if your major is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, you don't have to worry about the requirements set by, say, the College of Business or the School of Journalism.
