NSF 5-Year Young Investigator Award
Assistant Professor Dr. Michael Heithaus accepted the College’s offer to become Director of FIU’s Marine Science Program, effective Dec. 28, 2007. The Marine Science Program is a two-year-old interdepartmental program that presently includes faculty from the Dept. of Biological Sciences and the Dept. of Chemistry & Biochemistry. The program is based in the new Marine Science Building on FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus. Dr. Heithaus succeeds the Interim Director of the Marine Science Program and Professor of Biological Sciences, Dr. Joel Trexler.
Dr. Heithaus studies the behavioral ecology and conservation of “charismatic marine megafauna,” including sharks, sea turtles, dolphins, dugongs (Australian relatives of the manatee), and seabirds. He is among the researchers who pioneered the use of an underwater video camera, popularly known as the “Crittercam,” that can be attached directly to the backs of large vertebrates to allow them, in effect, to film their own behavior. more...
