Credential Files

A credential file is a professional file that stores information for your application for employment or graduate school admission. The Career Services Office at Florida International University has partnered with Interfolio, a comprehensive credential file and online portfolio management service to meet the needs of our student population. Interfolio is a document management service that allows our student’s to store, manage, and distribute their most important documents.

Why open a Credential File?

  • Credential files provide a central location for storing and mailing information necessary for admission to graduate school or for some professional positions.
  • The documents of the file are mailed out together in an attractive package to prospective employers and schools at your request.
  • It has a confidentiality option for the reference letters, which is required on some applications.
  • It eliminates the stress of asking individuals (professors, employers, etc.) to write and submit a recommendation letter every time you need a reference.

Who may have a Credential File?

Any current FIU student can open a file through Interfolio’s website. Simply select Florida International University as your institutional affiliation and begin using the services immediately.

What types of documents are contained in a Credential File?

  • Letters of Recommendation
  • Resume or Curriculum Vita
  • A Research Summary
  • A Program of Study
  • Evaluations
  • A Dissertation Abstract
  • A List of Course Work and Grades

Who should write reference letters for a Credential File?

Someone who knows you well enough to address:
  • Your intellectual and employable abilities and skills
  • Your interest in pursuing graduate study or employability in your field
  • Your distinct personal qualities (i.e. responsibility, leadership, discipline, team player)

People you may want to ask:

  • Professors, Advisors, and Campus Administrators.
  • Supervisors and Managers (from work and/or internships)

How many reference letters should be in a Credential File?

Typically, 3-5 reference letters are sufficient for most applications.

How can I open a Credential File?

The first step in the Interfolio process is to create your account online. You can do this by visiting Interfolio’s website and clicking on the yellow Get Registered box on the right hand side of the screen.

During this step you will need to set Florida International University as your primary institution affiliation and pay the annual account fee ($15/one year). The annual account fee covers all document storage, scanning and uploading services, as well as unlimited customer support.

Every file that you put into your Interfolio account is available online through your secure account. You can store any document that you need: letters of recommendations, transcripts, evaluations, and writing samples. You will have 24/7 access to these files. Your account allows for the storage of up to 250 MB of documents.

How Can I Distribute My Documents Using Interfolio?

Once you have collected your documents on line, you are ready to send them out. Interfolio allows you to send paper document packages via USPS first-class mail, USPS priority mail, 2-day tracked delivery, and overnight tracked delivery (express, tracked services provided by DHL).
