Hunting on the Web
Job Hunting on
the Web
by Dr. Pam Katzir, Adjunct Instructor,
English Department
The INTERNET has become the premier system
to connect employers to job seekers. Job postings over
the World WideWeb (www) have transformed the job search
process. Corporate recruiters, who "surf the NET,"
rave about the advantages of making the hiring process
faster and more efficient. The internet has made it
easier for employers to seek applicants, receive resumes
and interview prospective job candidates. In preparing
to begin your career you need to use this as another
valuable tool to access to employment opportunities.
Cyberspace will give you a competitive edge in the global
marketplace.
1.Check databases on a regular basis,
weekly is recommended. Look for a list of forums, organizations,
and job listings through a search engine such as Yahoo!
or Alta Vista where you can type in your objective.
2.Get advice. Career Talk is an occasional
column offering tips on job search techniques. This
is also a popular topic for newspapers and magazines.
3.Simplify your resume. The electronic
job search has some unique requirements to ensure that
your resume will translate into any computer screen
or e-mail box.
4.Network. Only a small portion of the
available jobs are listed in the classifieds. Up to
80% of job vacancies are found through networking. By
participating in newsgroups and e-mail lists, the Internet
can make networking easier than ever.
5.Check Career Services' links to job
search sites.
