Preparing Yourself for the Job Search

This section provides information on how to prepare, start, and execute your job search. If you are looking for job listings, check out our Jobs and Employment.

  1. Your first step should be to Register with Career Services.
    • Career Services can help you link your career ideas with employment opportunities.
    • The Career Services Staff can be an informative partner in your job search process.

     

  2. Start collecting valuable information about your work-related values, interests, skills, and knowledge through:
    • Sigi Plus, an interests assessment computer program that helps guide career choices
    • Career Counseling and/or the Career Course with Career Services
    • Creating a Career Portfolio
    • Starting a Credential File with Career Services

     

  3. Create a Summary of your Work-Related Values, Interests, Skills, and Knowledge.

     

  4. Research various occupations by doing:
      • Interviews with Professors, People in the Field, Mentors, and/or
    • Counselors/Advisors
    • Web Search
    • The Career Library and FIU Library

     

  5. Combine your Self –Knowledge with your Occupational Knowledge by:
    • Matching your values, interests, skills, and knowledge with various occupations
    • Choose a few occupations to focus your job search on.

     

  6. Next Package Your Skills to Match the Occupations of Your Choice by:
    • Creating Resume – See different resume samples under Job Search
    • Getting your resume critiqued by a member of Career Services

     

  7. Then start looking for job opportunities through Career Services which provides:

     

  8. For each job opportunity you find:
    • Submit a resume that matches that opportunity
    • If requested by the employer, send a Cover Letter that explains your specific skills and qualifications for that job.

     

  9. Start preparing for Interviewing by visiting the Interviewing Tips and Interviewing Questions Site.
