Do I Choose a Major? (part 2)
Steps
to take in Major Exploration
1).
This may seem simplistic, but if you plan to graduate
from FIU, you must pick a major that FIU offers. Use
the catalog to learn about the different academic courses
and programs offered. Start to eliminate those areas
that are not of interest and circle those you might
want to find out more about. If you're not sure about
what you do want to study, it may be easier to start
by eliminating those areas you know you do not want
to study.
2). You won't
really know if you enjoy a particular subject if you've
never taken a course in it. There are literally hundreds
of courses to choose from at FIU
take a class you've
never taken before. Use your freshman and sophomore
years to explore what's out there!
3) ! Do you have friends that are majoring
in the area you're interested in? Do you know neighbors
or have family friends or acquaintances who currently
work in the profession? Why not make an appointment
to visit with an academic advisor or faculty member
in the department you are considering? Spend some time
asking questions like: What kind of students are most
successful in this field? What things do you like most
about this profession? What things do you like least?
What kind of jobs would I be qualified for at graduation?
4) . F.Y.R.S.T. Explore
is a special residence hall living option offered in
partnership with Housing and Residential Life. This
program is designed to assist students who want to explore

5) to
help you gather additional information on particular
majors and careers. There are books in our Career Library,
videos and literature from numerous companies and dozens
of internet
resources available to help you accomplish this
step.
