Career Assessments
While there are many different types of interest
inventories and assessment tools available to
help point you in the right direction, there
is no one "test" that will give you the answer.
Career assessments are tools designed to help
you explore and identify skills, interests,
and values and how they may relate to career
fields. Whether you enter Florida International
University with a declared major or in an undecided
status, many of you will change majors at least
once before your degree is granted. The process
of choosing a major or career typically begins
with self-assessment. Consider taking one of
the assessments described below to learn more
about your interests, personality, skills and
abilities, and values.
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)-
This is a paper and pencil personality inventory
used to identify basic personality patterns.
There are sixteen personality types in all and
each type can be used to suggest potential majors,
professions, and work settings. Allow 45 min
- 1 hour to complete the assessment. A qualified
Career Consultant will interpret your results.
Self-Directed Search (SDS)- The SDS
is a self-administered and self-scored assessment
that will provide a three-letter occupational
code. The three-letter code is used to begin
to help you identify occupations and college
majors.
SIGI 3 (pronounced sigee 3)- SIGI 3
(or System of Interactive Guidance and Information
Plus) will help you examine your work-related
values, interests, and skills. Once you enter
your preferences, the program searches its built-in
databanks to find careers that most closely
match your preferences. There are 9 sections
in all, providing information on what occupations
might be like, skills necessary, how to prepare,
and more.
