The following are typical questions your students may ask and brief answers you can provide to guide them in the right direction for utilizing our services.

Q: I am confused about my career goals. What can I do?

A: CS provides many career development services including: career counseling and assessments, a computerized career guidance program called SIGI plus, a one-credit career course open to all majors (GEB 2935 Career & Leadership Development) and a College Majors Fair for undecided students.

Q: How do I get experience in my field before graduating?

A: Internships and other student employment opportunities are available in most majors. Students should visit the office to attend a workshop or view the workshop on-line and complete required paperwork. Refer students to the Student menu under Internships for more details. Other job opportunities are available through JobListings, an on-line job listing service. Job Listings (Also available through the Student Menu).

Q: Do you have more information for graduates?

A: The Competitive Edge Graduate Series are workshops conducted throughout the academic year designed to prepare graduate students for employment.  These workshops help students develop professional skills that will facilitate their productivity in the workplace. Previous workshops have included grant writing, presentation skills; jobs search strategies, management and supervisory skills, and developing your own business.  The calendar of events section of our website will have the date of the next scheduled workshop.

Q: How can I network with professionals in my field?

A: CS provides many opportunities for students to meet career professionals. Career Fairs bring over 100 employers to campus to meet with students. Career Forums are panel presentations that target specific career fields. These events allow students to ask questions of professionals in the field and network with panel members in a reception following the event. Get more information on Career Fairs & Forums (Note: this link will take you to the student section).

Q : Can I get help preparing my resume?

A: CS publishes an annual Career Services Handbook that contains information on resume and cover letter writing. Many Internet sources are also available. Sample resumes are available by clicking on the Career Resources section on the Student Menu (Note: this link will take you to the student section). CS also provides open resume critique hours when students can come in with a draft of their resume and receive feedback. Feedback is provided on a first come first served basis. Check with the office for the schedule.
