DEPARTMENTAL SEMINARS

Cassandra Quave (Major Advisor: Brad Bennett) gave a presentation in the Plant Talk Series on 6 September 2006. Her talk was entitled: Ethnobotanical applications of Arundo donax L. in S. Italy.

RESEARCH SEMINARS

Chad Husby (Major Advisor: Steve Oberbauer) presented a seminar entitled “Horsetails and Monkey Puzzles: Botanical explorations in northern and central Chile”: on 20 September 2006 as part of the Plant Talk Series.

GRANTS

Marbelys Rodriguez (Major Advisor: Leung Kim) was awarded an MBRS RISE fellowship beginning January 2007. Congratulations Marbelys!

PRESENTATIONS AT SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS

Roman Garcia (Major Advisor: Lidia Kos) recently presented a multi-authored paper: R. Garcia, A. Ittah, S. Mirabal, J. Figueroa, L. Lopez, A. Glick, and L. Kos. Endothelin 3 establishes a differentiated dermal melanocyte population in an inducible mouse model at the Pan American Society for Pigment Cell Research, 7-10 September 2006 in Cincinnati, OH. The theme of the meeting was “The Melanocyte and its Environment.”

Flavia Brito (Major Advisor: Lidia Kos) recently presented a co-authored paper: Flavia Brito and Lidia Kos. Cardiac and Skin Melanocytes Develop in Response to the Same Environmental Signals at the Pan American Society for Pigment Cell Research, 7-10 September 2006 in Cincinnati, OH. The theme of the meeting was “The Melanocyte and its Environment.”

Matt Graham (Major Advisor: Sylvia Smith) presented a co-authored paper: M. Graham, D. Shin, and S. Smith. Analysis of a C5-like sequence from the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum at 10th International Congress of the International Society of Developmental and Comparative Immunology in Charleston, South Carolina in July, 2006.

Samantha Whitcraft (Major Advisor: Chris Brown) presented a co-authored poster: S. Whitcraft, W. Richards, and N. Davis. Applying micro-acoustic tagging and telemetry methods to juvenile snapper habitat-use studies at the 136th Annual American Fisheries Society Meeting and the Larval Fish Biology Symposium held in Lake Placid, New York in September, 2006.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

The BGSA held a back-to-school mixer on Friday, 8 September 2006, in the Eco Tank.

The Comparative Immunology Club held a meeting on 26 September 2006. Dr. Bigger discussed research advances accomplished in his research laboratory.
