Laisel Martinez (Major Advisor: Rene Herrera) presented her Master’s thesis defense seminar entitled “Y-chromosome and mitochondrial DNA heritage of populations from Eastern Crete” on 13 November 2006.

Tenzin Gayden (Major Advisor: Rene Herrera) presented his Master’s thesis defense seminar entitled “Y-chromosome polymorphisms in the Himalayas” on 13 November 2006.

Jeff Wozniak (Major Advisor: Dan Childers) presented his doctoral defense seminar entitled “Quantifying nitrogen cycling rates in freshwater marshes of the southern Everglades using 15N tracer techniques” on 13 November 2006.

Dorothy Byron (Major Advisor: Jim Fourqurean) presented her Master’s thesis defense entitled “Determining the physiological response of a subtropical seagrass, Thalassia testudinum, to salinity stress using pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry” on 13 November 2006.

Sergio Ruiz (Major Advisor: Jim Fourqurean) presented his Master’s thesis defense entitiled “Response of the seagrass Thalassia testudinum to experimental manipulations of sedimentary iron and organic matter in a subtropical carbonate environment” on 14 November 2006.

Charles Goss (Major Advisor: Joel Trexler) presented his Master’s thesis defense entitled “Fish colonization of temporary wetlands in the context of the Everglades landscape” on 14 November 2006.

Greg Juszli (Major Advisor: Dan Childers) presented his Master’s defense seminar entitled “Patterns in belowground primary productivity and belowground biomass in marshes of the Everglades’ oligohaline ecotone” on 15 November 2006.

Bryan Desbury (Major Advisor: Jim Fourqurean) presented his Master’s defense seminar entitled “Artifically induced aggregation of fish and their effects on nutrient regimes and primary producers in an oligotrophic subtropical estuary” on 15 November 2006.

Emmanuel Vera Cruz (Major Advisor: Chris Brown) presented his doctoral defense seminar entitled “Insulin-like growth factor-1 gene expression as a growth indicator in Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus L.” on 16 November 2006.

CLUB ACTIVITIES

The Comparative Immunology Club met on 31 October 2006 in HLS II - 396 at 1:00 PM. The club members discussed: “Autoimmune diseases: when the system goes completely out of control.”

The Comparative Immunology Club met on 7 November 2006 to discuss a paper by Dr. Eduardo Groisman's (the 2006 Glaser professor) entitled: “The origin and evolution of human pathogens.”

The Comparative Immunology Club meeting held a meeting on 21 November 2006 in HLS II room 396 at 1:00 pm.

PUBLICATIONS

Alessandro Catenazzi (Major Advisor: Maureen Donnelly) recently had one of his dissertations chapters published online in Oikos: Catenazzi, A. and M.A. Donnelly. 2006. The Ulva connection: marine algae subsidize terrestrial predators in coastal Peru. Congratulations Ale!

FORMER STUDENTS
