The Department of Biological Sciences at Florida International University (FIU) and Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (FTBG) invite applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Plant Population Genetics with a focus on Conservation Genetics.
Florida International University is Florida's State university in Miami. It has over 38,000 students and offers more than 200 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in 21 colleges and schools. FIU ranks 3rd nationwide in granting bachelor's degrees to minorities and 9th in master's degrees. FIU is classified as a Doctoral/Research institution by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. This institution is committed to excellence in teaching, as well as applied and basic research. The Department of Biological Sciences of FIU has 39 faculty members, 900 undergraduate majors, and 100 graduate students. Tropical biology and conservation are major themes of the department. Faculty have a broad range of specializations within this area including: aquatic community ecology, food-web dynamics, ethnobotany, paleoecology, molecular systematics, conservation genetics of vertebrates and invertebrates, evolutionary biology and ecology, sea-grass biology, coral biology, behavior and ecology of marine mammals, fish biology, animal behavior, plant-animal interaction, plant functional ecology, plant eco-physiology, morphology and evolution of plant mating systems. The Florida Coastal Everglades LTER, funded by the National Science Foundation, is based at FIU, providing further opportunities for collaboration.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a research and education based botanic garden opened to the public in 1938. Fairchild is an independent not for profit institution with broad community support in south Florida. The garden has over 100 staff including 12 PhDs. The garden maintains one of the world's most comprehensive tropical plant collections with an emphasis on palms, cycads and tropical fruit. The research focus of the Center for Tropical Plant Conservation (CTPC) at Fairchild is on the conservation biology of south Florida and Caribbean plants, evolutionary biogeography and conservation management of tropical islands, and the conservation of palms and cycads. Fairchild works with partners in over 20 countries with active field programs in MesoAmerica, Madagascar, East Africa and the Caribbean. Working in tandem with the CTPC are highly professional education and tropical horticulture teams. As a public garden with high profile in the Miami community Fairchild offers unique opportunities to advance the public understanding of tropical biology and science in general.
Position background- Florida International University and FTBG have an institutional agreement and a long history of successful research/educational collaborations. As a result of these links a faculty line in Tropical Plant Molecular Systematics is currently operated between FIU and FTBG. This line was established in 1999 and has helped to establish many bridges between the two institutions. The advertised position is built upon the experience gained from this joint appointment. The joint FIU - FTBG research program focuses on tropical plant conservation with a major emphasis on palms, cycads, and the flora of South Florida and the Caribbean region. The subtropical environs of the Miami area offer a dynamic community of plant science related institutions, including an USDA research center with a genetics and germplasm orientation; the Montgomery Botanical Center, with an emphasis on palms and cycads; the University of Florida Tropical Research and Education Center; the Kampong, a unit of the National Tropical Botanical Garden; and the University of Miami Department of Biology.
Position description and required qualifications- The successful candidate will report to the Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences of FIU and to the Head of the CTPC at FTBG. He/she will have his/her lab in the current Center for Tropical Plant Conservation. As a faculty member he/she will develop an extramurally funded research program that supports excellence in research, teaching, and mentoring of graduate students. In addition, he/she will help design a new dedicated conservation genetics laboratory at the new Center for Tropical Plant Conservation at FTBG-a joint FTBG and FIU initiative. The position is a nine-month appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Teaching duties will include Genetics and Population Genetics. Ph.D. and postdoctoral experience that includes proven grant writing skills and a record of publication are required.
