BEA is an association of faculty, support personnel, and administrative
employees who work for improvement in the plight of African-descent employees of FIU. As
result of this, it is hoped that all members of the university and of the SUS (black, white,
brown, yellow, and red) are afforded opportunity for a more enriched, happy, and
fulfilling future.
BEA began at FIU in 1972, with the birth of the University.
A few, black faculty, administrators, and support personnel met and formed the
organization which we, all, look to for leadership, guidance, and support. We
would be remiss in listing some of the pioneers and mistakenly omitting others.
Consequently, suffice it to say our organization's first through current
presidents are: Herman Dorsett,
Bennie Osborne, Willie Williams, Betty Bigby-Young,
Gregory Reed, Rosa Jones, Jackie Hartley,
Herman Dorsett (again),
Dominic Mohamed,
and Gene Pugh (current).
Outstanding Contributions were made during the administration of
each of our leaders because each was committed, and fortunate enough to have the
support of FIU's hardworking, dedicated, determined, reliable, compassionate,
helpful, and visionary black employees.
OVER THE YEARS AND TODAY, BEA HAS:
- Institutionalized an annual holiday party, held at FIU in December, for 100
children from Inner-City Elementary Schools,
- Established regularly scheduled Dialogue-of-Progress meetings between FIU's
President's representatives and BEA's Dialogue Committee
- Assisted in the establishment of the Willie Williams Scholarship Award, an
honored, former FIU professor and BEA president
- Published, with grants from members of FIU's Executive Council, the Directory
of Black Resources to assist students and administrators;
- Initiated FIU's participation in the annual MLK, Jr. Parade in Liberty City
- Assisted the University in making a decent showing in the area of equal opportunity
and affirmative action
- Established the annual BEA Scholarship Awards, made possible by members of the
business community and BEA, and
- Regularly scheduled meetings, BEA's annual awards banquet, and social events.
Join us so you can learn more about what we have achieved to benefit both
ourselves and FIU, what we are working on now, and what we are targeting to achieve in the future.
