| The
FIU Student Chapter Offers Scholarship
& Award Recognition
The AWC
Florida International University (F.I.U.) student chapter has
created its own $250.00 AWC Scholarship for
a dedicated student member, a $50.00 President's Outstanding
Member Award for a committed student member and a
$50.00 Faculty Advisor Award for an outstanding student
whose involvement is exemplary. The three recognitions are given
in appreciation for outstanding dedication and performance.
The chapter
uses some of the money raised from its computer training classes
to award one student a $250 Scholarship each
semester and recognize two other student members with $50
awards. Sometimes two or three awards are given in
one semester. The board decided it could think of no better
way to thank student members for their diligence and participation
than by recognizing them with financial awards.
The criteria for the scholarship is based on leadership and
commitment. All applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and must submit
a two-page essay explaining:
- How they have contributed to the organization
- Why they feel they deserve the scholarship
- How they excelled in the following areas
1. Leadership
- Detail the projects they initiated and executed.
- Outline how their efforts helped direct the chapter in a new
direction
2.
Commitment
- Explain which special events they supervised or coordinated
- List the number of meetings they attended
Strong consideration
is given to members who initiated projects, spearheaded new
creative directions for the organization and volunteered their
time and effort. The applications are read by all the members
and everyone votes to select the best candidate. By having all
members vote to select the recipient, the scholarship becomes
a peer recognition of the work each member contributed.
The Outstanding
Member Award is awarded by the president of the organization
to an individual they feel has dedicated and contributed to
the success of the organization and deserves the recognition.
The Faculty
Advisor Award is given by the Faculty Advisor, Margo
Berman, to reward a student who has not received another AWC
Student Scholarship to recognize this individual's contribution
to the chapter.
