2007
Scholarship Recipients
For the sixth year FIU's student chapter has awarded a scholarship's to recognize outstanding student members. Our president was recognized in the fall semester with a $250.00 AWC Student Scholarship. Eight other members, including officers, were each honored with $65.00 AWC Student Recognition Awards for their oustanding commitment. In addition, one student was awarded the $50.00 Faculty Advisor Award for his development of our new blog. Another student received the $50.00 President's Outstanding Member Award this year.
We
found that these awards are a motivating and unifying
factor in increasing chapter participation. Congratulations
to this year's scholarship recipients and award winners.

Computer Training Workshops
We're
very excited about many of our recent activities. We
have Photoshop, QuarkXPress, Pagemaker and Web Page
design in the past. Now, we've added training for InDesign
and are continuing to offer training in Photoshop. We
may add an Illustrator workshop in the future.
The
computer training seminars are designed as fundraisers
for the student chapter. Some of these funds will be
used toward our new established scholarship fund for
active AWC student members and for other special awards.
We also use the funds to help sponsor events for Child
Hope, a 20+-year-old organization that assists homeless
and abused children. (See Community Involvement)
It's
All About Networking!
Each
year we produce our Annual Student Resume Book, which
is distributed at Atlantic-Florida professional chapter
events. Students are often called for job interviews
as a direct result of this publication.

AWC Chapter Selects
Non-Profit
Organizations
FIU's
AWC chapter works closely with the Atlantic-Florida
chapter. Students have been involved in the Community
Communications Project, which has granted one selected
non-profit organization assistance in developing a promotional
campaign funded by the AWC professional chapter.
Student
chapter members have also updated the South Florida
Media Guide for the past few years. In addition, they
have assisted in various aspects of different professional
chapter events, including on-site registration.
Community
Involvement
For
the past decade, AWC members have been actively involved
with Child Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated
to the welfare of abused and neglected children. Every
semester AWC members coordinate and supervise field
trips for the children of Child Hope. Through the funds
that are raised each semester, the organization orchestrates
and funds special events for the children.
Children have enjoyed attending Disney on Ice, magic
shows and puppet shows; Valentine’s Day, bowling
and holiday parties with pony rides; as well going on
field trips to the Miami Seaquarium, IMAX Theater and
the Discovery Center.
Student
members have also assisted in gaining publicity and
raising funds for the organization through radio interviews,
golf tournaments and Walkathons. In the past years,
students raised funds through computer training workshops
and the sale of Lucinda Pins.
Member's
Social Event
Not
all the funds that are raised are used towards special
projects, scholarships or awards. As members we were
able to also enjoy some of the funds for a well-deserved
social event for all members. To celebrate the cohesiveness
of our members, we have held off-campus get togethers
at nearby restaurants. Student members had a great deal
of fun after all their hard work. Everyone enjoyed socializing
and relaxing together. |
