FIU takes third place with 4-1 SBC
win over Arkansas-Little Rock

FIU women’s tennis team ended its season on a high note, defeating
Arkansas-Little Rock (19-7), 4-1, and claiming third place at the Sun
Belt Conference women’s tennis championships, Sunday in Mobile,
Ala.
The Golden Panthers (8-14) concluded a rebuilding year
with a roster of four freshmen and two juniors, by winning three of
four tournament matches played this weekend.
FIU won the doubles
point the hard way. After the Golden Panthers Mei
Ly and Bruna
Discordia lost 8-5 to Julieta Lillo and Bindiyi Parekh at No. 1,
FIU won at No. 2, then saw Davina
Duronio and Christine
Suard outlasted Montserrat Flores and Vanessa Nieto, 9-8, in the
deciding match at No. 3.
The Golden Panthers
took charge in singles, winning three of the four completed matches
to earn the win. Courtney
Jonson won her team-leading 14th spring decision, beating Nieto,
6-4, 6-0, at the No. 6 position.
Suard defeated Parekh, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 4 for FIU’s
third point and then at No. 2, Ly came back after losing the first set
1-6, to defeat Flores, 6-1, 6-0, and clinch the team win.
No. 13-ranked South
Alabama claimed the league’s automatic NCAA bid by winning its
12th-straight Sun Belt Conference women’s tennis title with a
4-0 victory over Denver in the championship match.
