FIU knocked into consolation bracket
after falling 4-1 to No. 66 Denver
econd-seeded Denver earned
a chance to play for its first ever Sun Belt Conference championship
as the No. 66-ranked Pioneers claimed a 4-1 win over sixth-seeded FIU
in the semifinals of the SBC championships, Saturday morning in Mobile,
Ala.
The loss snapped a string of three consecutive championship
appearances for the Golden Panthers (7-14) who will instead play the
loser of host South Alabama and Arkansas-Little Rock, Sunday at 10 a.m.
(ET) for third place.
FIU grabbed the
first point of the match by winning at No. 1 and 3 in doubles. At No.
1, Mei
Ly and Bruna
Discordia beat Yanick Dullens and Barbara Kourim, 8-3, and Davina
Duronio and Christine
Suard defeated Rossi Thomas and Elizabeth Messaros, 8-5, at No.
3.
But the Pioneers
came back and dominated singles play, winning the top four matches en
route to the victory. With Denver up, 3-1, the deciding match came at
No. 1 where Dullens outlasted Discordia, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
