FIU falls short with 4-2 loss to Middle Tennessee

he FIU women’s tennis team (5-13) ended its regular season schedule with a 4-2 home loss to Sun Belt Conference foe Middle Tennessee, Monday at University Park.

Middle Tennessee (8-10) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, winning the doubles point and No. 1-2 singles, before the Golden Panthers cracked the scoreboard with a pair of points, winning at No. 3-6.

But at No. 4 singles, Stacy Varnell beat FIU’s Christine Suard, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, for the match win.

The Blue Raiders took doubles matches at No. 1-3, for the point. FIU’s lone doubles win came at No. 2 where Desanka Jovanovic and Courtney Jonson beat Carien Venter and Emily Vest, 8-3.

Jovanovic and Jonson also won their two singles matches, giving FIU its only points of the contest. At No. 3, Jovanoic beat Venter, 7-5, 6-2, while Jonson dispatched of Vest at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1. It was the team-best 11th victory of the season for Jonson, the redshirt freshman from Elizabeth Grove, Australia.

At No. 1 singles, No. 50-ranked Manon Kruse raised her season record to 15-3, with a straight-sets victory over Bruna Discordia (6-1, 6-0).

The Golden Panthers now break until April 25-27 when the team travels to Mobile, Ala., for the Sun Belt Conference Championships.
