Golden Panthers sweep Manhattan,
inch closer to .500
five-inning no-hitter tossed by freshman pitcher Nicole
Barrett and 23 base hits on the night by FIU (18-19)
highlighted a doubleheader sweep over Manhattan (1-4) Tuesday
night at University Park.
The Golden Panthers won the nightcap, 9-1, behind Barrett's
pitching gem. In the opener, another five-inning affair won 9-0,
FIU pitcher Kendra
Laminack hurled a two-hit shutout behind a 13-hit attack.
In both games, the Golden Panther bats went to work early
and often. In the first game, FIU plated two runs on four hits
in the first inning, scored two more in the second, three in
the third and two more in the fourth inning to win going away.
Nicole
Dubovik had three hits and scored three times, while
Jennifer
Owens, Cindy
Turek and Linsday
Tippings had two hits apiece.
In the nightcap, the Golden Panthers staked Barrett to a 4-0
lead after the first inning on RBI singles by Owens, Turek and
Tippings, in front of a sacrifice fly by Kristen
Perry.
FIU was up 7-0 after three innings when the Jaspers finally
cracked the scoreboard for the first time all night, without
a hit. Manhattan shortstop Jennifer Kamph opened the fourth
inning reaching on a fielding error, stole second, moved to third
on a ground out and scored on a Barrett wild pitch.
On the night, Dubovik went 5-for-6 and scored five times while
Sun Belt Conference Hitter of the Week Owens had four hits, knocked
in four runs and scored three times.
The no-hitter was the second in as many weeks for the Golden
Panthers who no-hit Providence just last March 8 with a combined
effort by Amanda
Nealer and Laminack.
The Golden Panthers, who have now won 13 of their last 18
games, travel to the Rebel Games this weekend in Orlando. |
